Probably – but my parents own an amazing beach house in Prince Edward Island, and they’ve still got a couple rental weeks available this summer, so I thought – why not give them a shameless plug. Even if you can’t go, visit the site and listen to the seagulls and surf and have a mini vacation!
is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without
And never stops – At All –
Emily Dickinson, 1861
And now we march forward with our hearts in our mouths, waiting for November.
The above quote has been an essential guidepost in my life, but I seem to forget it for long stretches. When I recall the simplicity of that sentence, it leads me out of some pretty gripping self-pity. So, I thought I’d share my favorite book: Being Peace, just in case anyone else wanted a little mindfulness reminder. Learn more about Thich Nhat Hahn here.
and here’s the paper-related part: If you click here, “you will see clearly that there is a cloud floating in this paper” – page 51. A most eloquent description of the components of a sheet of paper, and therefore, the universe. Read it and then answer that infuriating grad school question “what is information?”. I dare you.
If you work in a library where the books and photos are all about climbing, and the library serves a larger organization which is all about climbing, then it seems logical that the best way to spend a staff development day is to tack a note on the door that says “gone climbing” and head out to the local crag. The weather was beautiful, the people I work with are great, and I only humiliated myself a little bit by not finishing my second climb – although I thought I actually did pretty well for not having climbed in 2 years. We’ve now got a rope set up in the library for folks to practice their knots. And I’ve got the climbing jones again.
I think I like my job.
